LVJUSD Regulation 3221 says for Grade Levels K-5,
the Optimum Student Enrollment is 650. The
current enrollment as reported by LVJUSD is as follows.
| Altamont Creek | 617 | Arroyo Seco | 768 |
| Croce | 736 | Jackson | 631 |
| Marylin | 537 | Portola | 479 |
| Rancho | 556 | Michell | 429 |
| Sunset | 776 | Smith | 665 |
While Regulation 3221 gives some flexibility under
certain circumstances, three schools are substantially
over 650 students and 3 schools are substantially
under 650 students. The board has three options:
- Ignore the regulation
- Change the regulation
- Redraw the neighborhood boundaries
How will the decision be made?
Will the district come up with a decision
making process that is as divisive as that
used earlier in the year to select schools
for closure? If the district decides to
redraw the school boundaries, then who
will participate in the process of developing the
new boundaries? What criteria will be used
to select the new boundaries?
The high enrollment schools are not always
located near the low enrollment schools.
Does that mean that schools that are
already near the optimum level will
be included in the boundary adjustments?
What are your options if you don't like the
decisions that the district makes for your
children? Will the district offer you
any options? Were the parents of the
Almond and Arroyo Mocho children offered any
options?
All of the above questions must be answered,
but there is one more question that is
even more alarming: Why wasn't the public informed
of this problem earlier?
When difficult decisions impact your family,
you expect and deserve full disclosure, open communication,
and a fair hearing where your input is valued and
acted upon with integrity and compassion.
I pledge to you that, if elected,
I will ensure that the district
operates with the honesty, integrity,
and compassion that you expect and deserve.
